The Crumb Artist: A Life of Creative Freedom

Robert Crumb is a name that sparks both fascination and controversy in the art world. His provocative, often explicit drawings have been met with criticism and outrage by some, while others celebrate his boldness and creativity. In this interview, we sit down with Crumb to discuss his work, his inspirations, and his thoughts on the reactions of those who find his art offensive.

I want to start by asking about your reaction when people criticize your work as racist or sexist. Do you feel like it's a valid critique?

Honestly, I do feel bad when people react negatively to my work. I know that I'm not trying to offend anyone, and I believe that people have an entirely mistaken notion of what my comics are about. But at the same time, I understand why some people might be upset by certain aspects of my art.

I've always tried to push boundaries and challenge societal norms in my work. I don't think it's possible to create something truly original without taking risks. And sometimes that means offending or disturbing people. But I never set out to intentionally hurt anyone or promote harmful attitudes.

In fact, I believe that my art is a form of social commentary, meant to expose the absurdities and hypocrisies of our society. By using humor and satire, I hope to make people laugh, think, and question their assumptions.

Of course, not everyone will appreciate my approach, and that's okay. As an artist, it's my job to create something true to myself, regardless of how others might react.

I'd like to talk about your sketchbooks, which are on display in the current exhibition at David Zwirner. Can you tell us a bit about what we can expect to see?

The sketchbooks are a treasure trove of early ideas and characters that have evolved over the years. You'll see the development of Fritz the Cat and Mr. T, as well as other beloved characters from my comics. These pages offer a rare glimpse into my creative process and the way I think.

I've always believed in ignoring the lines between high art and low art, good taste and bad, and countless other binaries. My sketchbooks reflect that approach, with everything from biblical illustrations to pop culture parodies.

What do you think about Robert Storr's interpretation of your work? He seems to have emphasized that it shouldn't be seen as offensive.

I completely agree with Robert. I've never drawn a single line meant to foster or encourage any negative attitudes. My goal is always to create something honest and authentic, even if that means pushing boundaries.

In the end, I think art should be about challenging our assumptions and making us think differently about the world around us. If my work can do that, then I'm happy.

With your 60-year career spanning everything from comics to fine art, what advice would you give to young artists who want to follow in your footsteps?

I'd say never compromise on your artistic vision, even if it means going against the grain. Always stay true to yourself and keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible. And don't be afraid to take risks – that's where the real creativity happens.

As for me, I'm just happy to still be creating at 75. I feel grateful to have had such a long and fulfilling career, and I hope that my art continues to inspire and provoke people for years to come.
